Showing up to see your GP for ‘peace of mind’

  • 16 October 2024

As a warm-up to the Shows Up movement, the people of South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw were urged to seek advice from their GP if they noticed anything unusual that could be a sign of cancer.

This was done through a three-month radio and social media campaign called Peace of Mind in early 2024.

The message was for people to get a Peace of Mind check if they were experiencing any signs, symptoms or changes that could be causing concern.

Part of the Shows Up broader mission to improve cancer outcomes is for people to get tested without delay, as an early diagnosis significantly improves the chances of successful treatment and survival.

Peace of Mind, which focused specifically on five types of cancer that have been shown to be diagnosed at a late stage across the region, will continue as part of Shows Up.

The campaign featuring real people of South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, reached over a million people and generated lots of positive feedback with the messages that people shouldn’t hesitate to seek medical advice and shouldn’t think they are wasting their GP’s time.

Dr Steph Edgar is a GP and the clinical lead for the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Cancer Alliance. She said: “We understand the fears and concerns that often accompany the thought of a cancer diagnosis. But we hope that we can shift the focus from fearing the worst, to understanding that seeing your GP promptly will provide answers and increase your chance of successful treatment should you be diagnosed with cancer. We believe that everyone deserves peace of mind when it comes to their health.”
