We need to talk
about cancer in
the workplace.

Almost one million people of working age are living with cancer in the UK. It is estimated that half of new cancer diagnoses across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw will be amongst working age people (18 to 64).

A Macmillan survey found that 85% of people with cancer who were
employed when diagnosed say it was important for them to continue
work after diagnosis. (Source: YouGov 2016).

Prevention

Every year, more than 127,000 people of working age are diagnosed with cancer in the UK. Around 4 in 10 of these cases could be prevented.

null

Detection & Diagnosis

Diagnosing cancer when it isn’t too large and hasn’t spread means that treatment is more likely to be successful and could lessen the effects of treatment, i.e. less time off work and lessened lasting effects of treatment.

Workforce Support

Even if we do the prevention and earlier diagnosis roles as an employer, unfortunately we will sometimes face situations where a member of our workforce has cancer or is caring for someone with cancer.

Living With Cancer

The journey for people living with cancer goes beyond receiving treatment. Other employees may be acting as carers and supporting someone with cancer.

The structure for the content is based on the Cancer Patient Journey created by the Cancer Research UK Convergence Science Centre.

Pledge

As part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Shows Up social movement we are supporting and recognising employers who are showing for their workforce on cancer.

By pledging you are helping this initiative build momentum as we turn the tide on cancer for people living throughout South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.
