Helping employers be proactive and do the right things when your workforce is affected by cancer.

This resource, provided by South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Cancer Alliance as part of the Shows Up social movement, helps employers take practical action when cancer affects their workforce.

It brings together trusted guidance, tools and resources from leading UK cancer charities, the NHS and occupational health experts, making it easier for employers of any size or sector to find reliable information and turn it into action.

Covering prevention, earlier diagnosis, support during treatment, return to work, and living well with and beyond cancer, the hub also includes real employer case studies, practical templates and specialist resources co-produced with people affected by cancer, employers and healthcare professionals.

Work is important for many people living with cancer and for carers.

This may be because a job:

  • provides an income,
  • social contact,
  • a sense of normality,
  • routine and stability,
  • can help with recovery and lead to better health.

Employers know that supporting someone through cancer is the right thing to do. Beyond this having a proactive approach on cancer employers makes sense for the organisation:

  • Detected early, cancer interventions are less traumatic and can reduce sickness absence through less treatment and recovery required.
  • Employees treated with early-stage cancer improves retention and productivity.
  • By supporting employees with cancer, it demonstrates inclusivity and sends the message that employees of all backgrounds and health statuses are valued and respected.

  • A workforce aware of signs and symptoms can support each other in a positive culture where people “show up” for each other.
  • Employees and clients will recognise this effort as a socially conscious employer supporting their workforce and the NHS.
  • Supportive initiatives can also remove barriers, which prevent people from returning to work and, in doing so, they can protect valuable workforces and future productivity.
